Architecture of Transition

Project Description

With women and children disproportionately affected in flat coastal areas such as Kutubdia, the proposed clinic provides a place to build trust and seek support in times of extreme uncertainty. During cyclones and periods of transition, the clinic becomes a home for up to 1200 people and livestock, supporting their lives off-grid while carving space for moments of pause and leisure. An expansive ground floor suggests different levels of communal gathering, privacy, and access to lush edible and medicinal gardens. Forming separate spaces for women and their children while weaving together local knowledge and materials, the design prioritizes comfort and safety rooted in shared cultural histories. Serving as a trusted communal resource for families to collect drinking water, for children to learn about traditional medicinal practices, and for women to find support and gather as a community.
