Project Description
Inspiration is drawn from informal urban imagery—grandmothers leaning on kitchen windows, sheets strung on clothes lines, young kids sneaking cigarettes on the fire escape. But this is a high-rise in Berlin, not an apartment block in the Mediterranean. So, the the project became about how to create this interstitial semi-formal setting within the context of East Berlin and still abiding by the rigid parameters of the studio. The resulting architecture is an urban block that transitions from a solid street base to the residential tower pulling back from the street through the use of vertical slits that erode the solidity and stoic nature of the Berlin block.
