Project Description
London has a rich history in terms of how housing has shaped the city – not only with respect to mass housing strategies and affordability measures, but also how the city has presented housing in the public realm.
The city’s current mayor has campaigned on the issue of lowering the cost of housing stock and put forth a variety of ambitious goals. A concept that was of particular interest to me was his calls for the redefining affordability at large. I found that many current strategies seem to be different versions of the same thing, and, in effect, do not present real solutions. Instead of value-engineering existing housing typologies that reflect an increasingly antiquated view of domesticity, I wanted to leverage emerging lifestyles and create a housing strategy that is tailored to, and takes advantage of, more affordable ways of living.
