Anthony Vidler (1941 - 2023)
It is with great sadness that the Yale School of Architecture community learned of the death of Anthony Vidler on October 20, 2023. Vidler taught at YSoA several times: initially, in 1981–1982, as a lecturer; and consecutively from Spring 2015 to Fall 2019 as the Vincent Scully Visiting Professor of Architectural History.
Courses taught by Vidler include the survey course “Modern Architecture and Society,” the survey course “Architectural Theory, 1968–Present,” the seminar “Architecture after the Rain: Theory and Design in the Post-Atomic Age,” and the seminar “The Architectural Surface: Figure, Form, Ambiance.” He was a key figure in the Yale Ph.D. program in architecture.
Vidler delivered the George Morris Woodruff, Class of 1857, Memorial Lecture in Spring 2015 and the Brendan Gill Lecture in Spring 2016.
