Jack Rusk: Unlike monks, though, the residents here neither ora nor labora; instead, they play. The residents of the commons are able to live leisurely lives, skimming off the excess while providing essential ecological and public services. By commingling communal dwelling with waste treatment facilities, this project expands the aspirations of 1970s capsule projects to an urban scale. Unlike past systems-driven projects, the commons are not a closed system. Instead, they are an organ within a much larger urban matrix—instead of cloistering off, they invites in.
