Jack Rusk: Metabolic Commoning foregrounds the systems and people often excluded from urban polity and place-making. The waste treatment plant at the center, with its 30 live-in employees, draws spatial and conceptual inspiration from monastic and utopian communities. This urban organ knots social reproduction in domestic spaces around civic reproduction at the infrastructural scale. The communards of centuries past sought equivalence between their earthly existence and the world of G-d above. Metabolic Commoning is concerned with something much less heavenly: How do we live with our s–t?
