Home, Sweet Home: The Collective Nature in Material Reclamation, Redistribution, and Reuse of a Deconstructed House
When a home ceases to be a home, what story does it continue to tell? This post-war prefabricated house offers an alternative to the conventional paths of demolition or renovation—deconstruction. Deconstruction, as it turns out, is a process of transformation, not simply destruction. Through a series of collaborative efforts, the post-war home was carefully dismantled and its materials thoughtfully salvaged and reimagined.
“Landfill—Not Where a Home Ends Up" encapsulates the core message of this exhibition. As a silent documentary, the exhibition maps the intricate web of people and processes that turn surplus into sustenance. Housing equity and resource distribution take center stage, as the materials from one home find new purpose through organizations like New England ReUse, International Refugee & Immigrant Services (IRIS), Habitat for Humanity ReStore, and the Salvation Army. Against the backdrop of escalating housing crises and global displacement, the story of the deconstructed house illuminates deconstruction as an act of both environmental responsibility and social care. Each salvaged component tells a story of resilience, proving that architecture’s true value lies not just in its static form, but in its ability to endure, adapt, and be reborn.
