Tempietto Exemplum
Tempietto Exemplum positions Bramante’s canonical Tempietto within the contemporary through the means of drawing. Nearly thirty architects and firms contributed original drawings of the Tempietto for display in the School of Architecture’s North Gallery. The only requirement: to maintain a square format, just as the geometry of the square underlies and universalizes the Tempietto’s proportions. In turn, the exhibition showcased a wide variety of responses: the drawings and corollary statements ranged from the highly analytical to the overtly whimsical. Among the mélange are attentive watercolors, a 4’x4’ hand-stitched tapestry, precise geometric analyses, a shimmering hologram, investigative field reports, a grid of 144 vintage postcards, and a photograph of a Tempietto wedding cake, circa 1996. In an era of exceptionally diverse representational approaches, Tempietto Exemplum is a project that exemplifies current attitudes towards both the joys and burdens of architectural history.
