JOB DESCRIPTION

Workstead is seeking a Project Designer to join its Brooklyn studio. This role is suited to a thoughtful and highly motivated designer with a strong conceptual foundation and the ability to carry projects through all phases—from early conceptual design through construction. Working closely with senior leadership, this individual will play an integral role in shaping projects while maintaining a high level of organization, precision, and design integrity throughout. In particular, we are seeking someone with experience on high end residential projects and with FF&E selection and development.

Key Responsibilities:

• Contribute to the design and development of projects across all phases, from concept through construction

• Develop presentations, mood boards, and visual materials that communicate design intent clearly and effectively

• Advance design concepts through modeling, rendering, drawing, and material exploration

• Produce and coordinate technical documentation, including drawing sets, FF&E specifications, and material schedules

• Participate in construction administration, including RFIs, submittals, site visits, and punch lists

• Coordinate with consultants, vendors, and fabricators throughout the project lifecycle

• Present work internally and externally with clarity and confidence

• Support project leadership in maintaining scope, schedule, and budget alignment

• Mentor and guide junior team members as needed

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Skills and Attributes for Success:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture or Interior Design

• 6+ years of professional experience, ideally within high-end residential design

• Strong design sensibility with a demonstrated ability to contribute to concept development and execution

• Proficiency in AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, and spec-writing/procurement tools

• Experience producing construction documents and coordinating across project teams

• Knowledge of materials, high-end FF&E, and specifications, with an eye for detail and craftsmanship

• Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills

• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities

• Knowledge of space planning, clearances, code requirements, and other technical best practices

• Facility developing projects through both 3D and 2D representations

The Urban Resources Initiative (URI) – both a program of the Yale School of the Environment (YSE) and a New Haven-based environmental non-profit – is hiring Yale student interns to participate in its GreenSkills program this fall and spring!

TheGreenSkills program is a city-supported green-job-training program for local high school students and adults who have barriersto employment. Our crews plant trees along city streets, in parks, and at schools, at the request of New Haven residents,businesses, and community institutions.

GreenSkills Planting Team Roles – In-Person

As a GreenSkills planting team member, you will join either our weekday planting team and/or supervise our Saturday youth crews. Regardless of which team you join, you can expect to: learn about urban ecology, tree planting, and stewardship; work outside in variable weather conditions; participate in weekly team meetings; form meaningful relationships with team members who may have very different life experiences from you; connect with New Haven residents about what matters to them in their neighborhoods; and drive large landscape trucks with trees and navigate throughout the City of New Haven to multiple planting sites. Never planted or pruned a tree before? That’s okay! Paid training is provided.

 The fall semester internship starts the week of September 2 through the week of November 24.

 Winter work is available, including tree pruning.

 Spring semester dates are TBD.

Planting Crew Trainer (Adult Program)–

Join members of our non-profit partner organizations New Haven Works, IRIS (Integrated Immigrant & Refugee Services), and The Goodwill Reentry Initiative in the operations of urban tree planting. A valid driver’s license is required. The job includes driving a tree truck, loading trees, digging, mulching, lifting, carrying, and being outdoors; communicating with tree adopters; entering tree points into our database; labeling trees; watering trees; presenting information to a small group; and interacting with other members of the public about trees and our work.

Shifts: Mornings (6:30 am-12:30 pm) and Afternoons (12:00 pm-5:00 pm). Students working on the weekday team are assigned to one or two shifts weekly (for example, Monday mornings). Weekly meetings are required. Fall semester dates are between 9/8/26-11/25/26.

Planting Crew Supervisor (High School Program) - Yale interns will work in pairs to supervise and mentor a team of six high school students in tree planting. The job includes digging, mulching, lifting, carrying, being outdoors, leading small groups, submitting written reports, communicating with tree adopters, and coaching students. A valid driver’s license is preferred.

Shifts: Every Saturday 9/12/26-11/21/26 from 8:00 – 4:30. Shift begins Weekly meetings and pre-season trainings are required.

GreenSkills Office Roles – In-Person

Joining our GreenSkills Office Team is a great opportunity to support the “behind-the-scenes” operations of running an urban forestry program. Program Communications Intern The Program Communications Intern(s) will work closely with both the GreenSkills Program Managers and the Development and Outreach Manager to support essential administrative tasks for URI’s GreenSkills program. They must be comfortable using Excel/Google Sheets, making phone calls, and sending emails and texts. Native Spanish speakers are strongly encouraged to apply. Folks with other language skills, including Arabic and Pashto, are encouraged to apply as well.

The primary tasks expected in this role include:

• Communicating with tree requestors by phone and email

• Helping to maintain our tree request database system

• Preparing and disseminating outreach materials

• Updating URI’s social media outlets

• Entering tree requests into the Call Before You Dig system so that our planters are digging safely
